Monthly check-in

So many things happening so hard to keep up.

Some quick updates:

Got Through the Breach. I'm very excited to play. So many possibilities.

Played in Bill Meyer's DCC Game at Villainous Lair, that was a blast...I was playing the Warrior with the 18 luck, and no brains.

There's a Holiday themed DCCRPG game on Sunday this weekend...sounds like fun!

Got lots of Gaming goodies for the boys for XMAS...like....[redacted]

Unpub Mini SD report

Last Nights event at Pair-a-Dice Games, was fun, though short for us, as we were only there for about 3 hours. There were tons of indie games, in development.

Pretty big turnout. I can tell you this...it was LOUD in that gaming hall.

Ian and I play Anaconda, a Civil War CSN vs. USN card game, by Alex Bagosy (Designer of the upcoming "Divided Republic" board game as well as the creator "Brave Men, Badly Led" family of miniature games. Owner/Operator of Black Army Productions, LLC.)

It was a fun 2-person game which has distinctively different strategies for the two faction.

Charge, as played by Sean and Ian was a frantic army building card game. They really enjoyed it.

I got to play StarCade by Derak Morreli, of "We Are Dead". This microgame is fast with 4 different modes of play, so, two-player and multiplayer.

Unfortunately getting into some games was tough,as they filled up fast.

Hope to have more time next time one of these events happens.

Gam3rCon Gam3Day RIGHT NOW!

Well it snuck up on me without my noticing. Today is a Gam3rCon Gam3Day, from 12-9PM....

I know there was going to be some DCC RPG there today, my life is so hectic these days that after going to the Pair-a-Dice event last night, which was REALLY fun. I totally forgot about the Gam3Day, which is a bummer cuz I wanted to get my DCC on.

$5 at the door unless you're running games.

10th Avenue Theatre downtown.

AEG Vanguard

Cool,

I'm now in the AEG Vanguard program. So as I close one chapter in my gaming life, I open a new one. With the decline of the Mongoose Infantry program, I'm a bit bummed I won't be working towards more great minis for my Judge Dredd game (Though watch this space for an unboxing review of the Judge Dredd Starter Box set; coming this weekend.)

I'm kinda jazzed about being on the AEG Vanguard though, AEG puts out so many cool board games, and of course L5R CCG/RPG.

Love Letter is a pretty fun fast game
Infinite City is a great game with lots of strategy and a little luck.
Agent Hunter is quick and easy, but still challenging.

I was looking at Doomtown Reloaded this weekend, and it looks like it keeps the same flavor as the original, which I still have all my old cards...heh.

Anyway, none of my local stores are Strongholds, so I know what I'm doing this weekend.

Paranoia RPG Kickstarter

The 6th Edition of the PARANOIA Roleplaying game is now hitting Kickstarter.

It is already funded in under 24 hours.

As I've mentioned before, PARANOIA IS one of my favorite games of all-time. It's fun to run, it's fun to play, it's fun to read the books.  PARANOIA was the first game I ran as the now defunct Mongoose Infantry.

That being said, I've been waiting to hear about the new edition. I'm reading through the Kickstarter information, and I'm not sure if I like it or not...The shift from Commie Mutant Traitors is being shifted to terrorists, so that would mean that Death Leopard should become Enemy number 1. There will be card based mechanics in the new edition, the dice appear to be changing to d6s (judging by the add-on). Character creation will be round robin style, so adding additional players later on will be difficult. I'm watching the kickstarter, and I will see about backing at a later date. I'm sure I will back it (lots of stretch goals will probably be in it.), I will definitely play it at least once. First stretch goal has been reached, second is approaching.

The classic RPG of a darkly humorous future; Rebooted by James Wallis to be faster and even easier to play.
Serve the Computer! The Computer is your friend!
Imagine a world designed by Kafka, Stalin, Orwell, Huxley, Sartre and the Marx Brothers.
Paranoia is a roleplaying game set in a darkly humorous future. In Paranoia, a well-meaning but deranged computer desperately protects the citizens of an underground warren from all sorts of real and imagined enemies. You play one of The Computer's elite agents. Your job is to search out and destroy the enemies of The Computer. Your worst fear is that The Computer will discover that you are one of these enemies.
Paranoia: A light-hearted game of terror, death, bureaucracies, mad scientists, mutants, dangerous weapons, and insane robots, which encourages players to lie, to cheat, and backstab each other at every turn.
Is that fun? Trust us.

Paranoia Rebooted

The all new, rebooted Paranoia box set has been designed to be played almost immediately from opening the box. It offers fast, manic game play through the use of streamlined mechanics and substantial components including Computer Dice and high quality cards to represent equipment, mutations and much more!
Paranoia now offers a thoroughly modern roleplaying experience, allowing you to get into the game even quicker:
  • Streamlined, simple rules with new card play that allows maximum carnage while allowing you to concentrate on the action (and survival).
  • A 21st Century approach to Alpha Complex - Terrorists have taken their proper place as the greatest threat now but Commies are still lurking in the background, and the Computer's benevolent surveillance capabilities are as all-encompassing as they were envisioned in 1984 (Paranoia's original release!).
  • The principal designer is James Wallis (Baron Munchausen, Once Upon a Time), the most celebrated designer of story-telling games (the Computer says so), assisted by original designers Eric Goldberg and Greg Costikyan, and Violet-level High Programmers-to-be, Grant Howitt and Paul Dean.
  • Minimum effort, maximum fun - with the simplified game system and card decks, you will be able to get into Paranoia within 10-15 minutes.
And shipping is free, worldwide!
Paranoia is better. Other games are not better. Back Paranoia.
The original Paranoia was a product of, well, Cold War paranoia. Today, we have no need to be paranoid! The NSA and GCHQ work tirelessly to ensure that we are all safe and secure against the pervasive threat of Commie mutant trai.... Uh, I mean, evil, crazed terrorists.
Every good citizen knows that you have nothing to fear, if you are a law-abiding citizen! Only evil-doers will be seized without trial, waterboarded, and force-fed.
Rest assured that real-world Troubleshooters are toiling unceasingly even as you scan these words to ensure that the traitor Snowden receives his just desserts for unnecessarily evoking Paranoia in a world that needs it not at all!
Universal surveillance is almost here! Tens of thousands of cameras have already been installed in cities worldwide to ensure the continuous monitoring of the activity of all citizens, ensuring our safety from malefactors. Hard AI is on the horizon, and its creation will be an inevitable boon for all of humanity! The Computer is almost here! Utopia is just over the next horizon!
The real world is rushing to meet the promise of Paranoia.
Paranoia is subversive and traitorous. It slyly uses humour to induce treasonous thoughts, inculcating an un-mutual sense that authority is not always correct, and that submissive obedience to authority is questionable. Such questions must not be asked!
Join today – your clones will thank you. And remember...
Stay alert! Trust nobody! And keep your untested prototype weapon handy!
Paranoia is one of the RPG 'greats' with players having been blasted, vaporised, and otherwise terminated for the past 30 years. It demonstrated that adult/sophisticated/black humour themes could be brought to roleplaying games, it won the Best Role-Playing Game of the Year award in 1984, and was inducted into the Origins Awards Hall of Fame - one of only 10 RPGs to ever gain that distinction.
And now, it is time for a brand rebooted edition, including all your old favourites but with bang up to date game play.

Box Contents

Developed by World Famous Games Designer James Wallis and his minions, the new Paranoia arrives in a swanky box set, piled high with goodies. All Paranoia books are printed in high quality full colour, and you will receive the following in your box set with a Green-level pledge.
  • A brand new Player's Guide safely separates Red clearance rules from those things players are not meant to know.
  • The Games Master's Guide contains all the diabolical tricks, traps and general nastiness needed to run Paranoia successfully.
  • The Missions Book features several brand new scenarios to get you started as Troubleshooters in Alpha Complex.
  • 100 full colour cards covering everything you need to play from character creation and mutant powers to combat and the latest equipment from R&D.
  • The special Computer Dice, a six-sider with the symbol of the Computer to let you know when things really have gone pear-shaped...
  • Six wipe-clean (allowing you to wipe away pen marks - or Troubleshooter's blood, as the case may be) Character Sheets, so you will never have to use a ragged print out ever again!
Truly the Computer has rewarded its most loyal servants.
All of this is wrapped in a one-off Ultraviolet level box set - this is available to Kickstarter backers only. When the retail release comes about in 2015, it will come in a standard Red level set.

Insanity and beyond!

Well I've been out of it for quite a while now.

More excuses, our other drafter was let go, thus I have been running ragged with extra hours. Had that killer cold for 3 weeks, and I'm just now fully recovered from that. Back at the gym as of Tuesday, after 6 weeks off from the Gym as well.

Pretty much I've been gaming vicariously through GM Intrusions for Numenera, and reading some games.

Playing Destiny, because that's easy with a mushy/tired brain.

When I have full clarity I'm working on the MalMart Catalog for Interface Zero. Speaking of which I saw IZ2.0 in the wild today, that was cool!

Destiny and Numenera

So the boys and I picked up Destiny on Tuesday.

Having already played the Beta, we had already figured out that Numenera (Cipher system) would be the best fit for an RPG adaptation.

Numenera blends both Technology and Magic, just like Destiny. The setting could be the end of the 4th World. Or perhaps it's a later world where mankind was brought back a second time.

So there are three classes in Destiny, and three classes in Numenera, and they are strangely analogous.

Hunter = Jack (Or Vector more likely)
Titan = Glaive
Warlock = Nano

The Destiny classes, pick up engrams which contain the ability for the Crypto vendor to decipher a weapon or piece of armor.

In a pen and paper RPG, I would want to go way more in depth with ancient technology, more like ciphers in Numenera, than the video game does. Which is of course one of the failings of Video games. In video games, you don't 'need' miscellaneous items. You don't need rope, or backpacks, food, water, etc. (except in older MMORPGs like Everquest).

If you're sent on a mission to eradicate a threat on an alien planet, you might just need those things.

RPG-A-Day #27 - New Edition

Game I'd like to see improved/new edition!
Well this is related to my dislike of the antiquated Palladium MDC system. I would really love to see RIFTS allow conversion books to other systems. Rifts has always been one of my favorite settings. But I like FAST combat, I also feel that having to stop and repair your armor after every encounter is not fun.

The world is full of challenges, magic, technology, a fascist government, and plenty of weird. It's a wonderful world, which would be amazing to play in other systems.

RPG-a-Day Catch-up: Days 11-17

Day #11 – Weirdest RPG Owned
Weirdest RPG Owned, That’s a tough one. I don’t consider any of the RPGs I won to be really weird. So while Weird War II actually has WEIRD in the title. I think CthulhuTech actually gets the nod as the strangest. Combining the Horror of the Mythos and The ability to fight them with Mecha and Guyvers effectively. Very strange, yet very cool.

Day#12 – Old RPG you still read/play
Paranoia, Originally published while I was still in high school, this is still the most fun game that I still get to play. I own the 2nd edition box, but run the MGP publishing XP edition. Runner up is Earthdawn,

Day#13 – Most memorable Character Death
We were playing Black Hand low generation vampires in VtM. I can't for the life of me remember the character's name; something Toreador-esque.  We entered into the enemies hideout, and were attacked by an Abomination, I utterly botched my dodge roll and had my neck broken, and then impacted the steel door killing my 10th generation vampire in 1 attack...

 Day#14 – Best Convention Purchase

Day#15 – Favorite Convention Game
Paranoia is normally my favorite, but I got to play FATE Day after Ragnarok with Morgan Ellis and Ian at OrcCon this year. I got to play Frank Frazetta, young barbarian!! Ian was playing the Grease Monkey...Cailey.. I remember leaping from our moving truck onto the pursuing vehicle running across and lopping the head off the man on the Machinegun pintle mount with a single swing. Frank Frazetta also made a deal for a case nitroglycerin.

FATE is such a great game when you have the right people playing. It's a great game for 1-shots as well.

Day#16 – Game I wish I owned.
I guess I wish I had my Elfquest box set back. When I was clearing out games when I was low on cash, that was one that went. We're all big fans of ElfQuest to this day.

Day#17 – Funniest game I’ve played
Paranoia, one of the most fun games to actually play at a convention. You don’t need to know the rules, in fact, you’re not supposed to know the rules. There’s no rules lawyering, just plain old backstabbing fun.

RPG-a-Day Day 26 - Favorite Character Sheet

By far, my favorite character sheet is the Numenera Character sheet.  It's gorgeous!

RPG-a-Day - Playing Catch-up (Days 1-10)

As you know I came to the show late....

So here's some catch-up:

Day#1 - First RPG Played
AD&D – 1983. Walked out to lunch, saw the guys from my GATE class sitting at the lunch tables looking at a book. Iain Shigeoka, Mike Shaw, Jeff Partridge; thanks.

Day#2 - First RPG Gamemastered
AD&D – 1983. I think the first game I ever ran was a Monty Haul dungeon crawl with a neighbor.

Day#3 - First RPG Purchased
AD&D Player’s Handbook. I had to have my own Player’s Handbook.

Day#4 – Most recent RPG Purchased
Not sure if The Strange counts for most recent purchased, as it was my Kickstarter reward. I also picked up Usagi Yojimbo RPG weekend before last.

Day#5 – Most Old School RPG I Own
Considering that I still own my original PHB/DMG/MM, it would be my AD&D books.

Day#6 – Favorite RPG I never get to play
This is a tough one, I love playing Earthdawn, but you need a great GM to run it. I don’t get to play in Earthdawn Games. I don’t get to play except at Cons generally, as I’m usually running.

Day#7 – Most ‘Intellectual’ RPG Owned
I used to own Phoenix Command/Living Steel, this had to be the most complex and intellectually designed game I’ve ever seen. Table after Table, too much for me.

Day #8 – Favorite Character
It has to be per system. In DCC my favorite character is Bub, my 4 Int Halfling Gypsy, who didn’t quite make it. In Earthdawn it was Txoro, the T’Skrang Warrior who became so much more. In Pathfinder Marra, my teenaged Inquisitor, who lost someone dear to her when she was a member of Lamm’s Lambs. I love creating characters with true character, and memorable traits.

Day #9 – Favorite Die/Die Set
I have to say, 2d10. Nice pyramid curve, which can be used to replace nearly any d20 roll (except tables from 1-1-20)

Day #10 – Favorite Tie-in Novels.
Eberron – City of Towers. The novels that Keith Baker himself penned. They did an excellent job of bringing the campaign setting to life.

Just like Harry...

Changes:

It's amazing how in gaming you can get stuck in a rut, which can be very hard to get out of. Many people spend most their time playing the ONE game. I'm definitely ADD when it comes to gaming. So much so that sometimes it's hard to stick to a single system for any length of time. I have hundreds of ideas racing through my brain, but it's hard to get the entire idea out and accomplished before the next one hits.

The cool part of it is that I LOVE to experience new systems. Thanks to this blog, I've been able to attend lots of conventions, play in lots of different games. I personally love FATE because I've gotten to play FATE with Mike Olson, Morgan Ellis, and Chris Czerniak. I love DCC because it harkens back to the gonzo old school gaming without the Monty Haul treasure hoard.  (even though it uses the much reviled d20.) I think for me it doesn't matter as much for DCC because it's a more light hearted game. In a story telling game I don't want to have a linear chance at failure.

That d20 is one of the reasons I fell out of love of Pathfinder. In addition to rules glut. Too much!!!

Eventually, I will get time to work on my 2d10 system, based upon the SRD....but for now a quick tweak here and there for some games helps. 2d10 for Numenera for example.

RPG-a-Day Day 21 - Favorite Licensed RPG

I'm a bit late coming to this party. (I will play catch-up this weekend.)

Favorite Licensed RPG.

This is one of those categories where it's very difficult to make a decision. There are so many amazing products for licensed properties.

I have to make my decision merely based upon, how well the system emulates the IP.

My Favorite is definitely Dresden Files. The FATE system seems to emulate the world of Dresden amazingly.

Update

Woo...

So I turned in an outline for the Malmart catalog, unfortunately, I was suffering from a pulled Hamstring as well. Therefore I've been recovering from that, lots of energy being sapped for that.

We did get a chance to run some DCC RPG at the Summer Gaming Club at the Library. I ran the first half of Prince Charming, reanimator. I love that adventure.

Next week is the last week of Summer Gaming club.

I've been talking with Mario Torres about doing an interesting project for a cool accessory.

Recharged

With Gam3rCon behind us, and one big convention remaining in the year, I'm feeling recharged and ready to rock.

The Strange is on the way, and the PDF looks GORGEOUS!!! Can't wait to get the full book in my hands. from what I've seen of the PDF just glancing through, it's just full of gorgeous artwork.

Monte Cook games is producing some of the most incredible work I've ever seen. The system (aside from the 1d20, which Monte even thought of using 2d10) is great and innovative.

I should have my copy of IZ2.0 on my doorstep in a few days.

All these great games, any one want to Patreon me so I can just play games ALL day..I only need around 50k/ year =D

Gam3rCon 2014 was made of awesome!

OK, so that was the best Gam3rCon thus far. I might be biased because I brought home the BIG PRIZE from the Loot Room (a Mountain Bike from MRI Performance.)

Sean picked up a Digital download of Alan Wake, and a copy of the Star Wars Age of Rebellion game. Ian went all in with his points on a pair of gamer glasses.

On Saturday Ian rocked the Duck Hunt tournament (best in 5 rounds) scoring 69,500 points after 3 perfect rounds and missing very few ducks in rounds 4 and 5. I did not do as well, only scoring 2,500 points, landing me in a solid 3rd to last.

I ran Judge Dredd every day using my new Karl Urban block for a Full Eagle Day evaluation. The judges have it hard with Judge Morgan needing to take out at least 1 ganger AND not be killed in order to pass the evaluation. After a dozen games or so, it was nearly even.

I have a new favorite DCC RPG module after running Prince Charming, Reanimator. I enjoyed it so much I'm going to have to locate my EX1 and EX2 old school modules (Dungeonland & Through the Magic Mirror.) What's amazing is I believe that the Transylvanian Adventures rules could be used to run it as well.

We culminated the week with watching  the Radioactive Chickenheads!

That's all for now, Gam3rCon was made of Awesome, and I can't wait til next year.

Gam3rCon Day 3

The fun continues tomorrow at Gam3rCon.

The great prize room has lots of prizes including Magic Cards, Think Geek items, a WikiPad, USAopoly games, Steve Jackson Games, and much much more. There's a scavenger hunt, daily video game tournaments, on modern systems, a Ouya, and the retrocade.

I will be running Judge Dredd from noon-2pm again tomorrow. So far I've had 9 or 10 people come by and give it a try. Reception has been great.

Transylvanian Adventures will be happening tomorrow as well. Ass-kicking Gothis horror is the tagline for this amazing DCC setting. Much crunchier than Standard DCC but it really captures the feel retro horror.

Gam3rCon continues Day 2

Gam3rCon proper may be going on right now, but every month this year, there's been a Gam3day as well. Usually just a 9-hour event (noon-9) on a Sunday (YEAH! Free Parking!!!!)

Gam3rCon.com for location and costs. (Dress for heat, as the building is OLD, and it gets HOT.)

Join the Gam3rCon meetup to watch for those days. ($5 if you're just there to play, but FREE if you're running a game)

WiggityBang Games is a  sponsor this year, and They have a Kickstarter running for a new game called Alpha Bandits.(It has funded already, but with 6 days to go there's plenty of Stretch goals to hit.

San Diego Comic Con/Gam3rCon starts TODAY

In about 2:15 minutes the wave of geekery descends upon San Diego.

If you're going to Comic Con...enjoy, and be safe out there, feel free to drop by Gam3rCon as well. While not a HUGE event, it is part of the overall SDCC experience.

I will be running Judge Dredd daily at Gam3rCon using my new (though not 100% complete) Karl Urban block. (So if you see Karl Urban at Comic Con, let him know...I'd love to run a game of JDMG for him.

Same with anyone at the 2000AD booth.

Anyway more prep-work to do. And I need to arrive early enough to drop off the Table.

Still alive

Hey all,

Been really busy actually gaming in addition to working, Gam3rCon is coming up next week, so I'm busy prepping for that as well.

I will be running Judge Dredd Minis 12-2 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.

Saturday I will be running DCC RPG Transylvanian Adventures heavily modified Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh.

The Strange - 2d10 For the Win
